I first met John Eles in Jacqueline Tappenden's first-year Latin class, where he was a good if not outstanding student. He was not particularly good looking but...he had a fine mind and a warm, engaging personality. Because we both enjoyed railroads & trains, we became friends. I was surprised one day to see in a large article and photo in the Plain Dealer explaining that John had been a special guest on the last Pennsylvania Railroad's last passenger train to depart Cleveland. I believe he got a cab ride in the locomotive, too. Over the years we saw each other maybe a dozen times, always at train shows or on fantrips. He always had a big smile and, if he seldom remembered my name, could quickly place me and start conversing as if there hadn't been 20 years since we saw each other. He was a railfan's railfan and had a large collection of memorabilia and postcards. I'll miss John Eles as I do my other deceased high school friends.
