After graduating from Ohio University, she joined VISTA, a domestic version of the Peace Corp formed in 1965 to combat poverty. Later, she worked for many years for a Non-Profit devoted to advocacy for welfare rights. She worked for the Non-Profit, both in New York and Washington, D.C., until poor health forced her to retire.
She walked the talk; in 1986 she adopted an 8 year old boy of color and committed herself to optimzing his upbringing.
Barbara was an early crusader for Social Justice, for Tikun Olam. She was a "Goodenah Shooma" (a good soul).
