GRAHAM MARY KATHERINE GRAHAM, 94, died on April 29, 2013. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on September 23, 1918 to Arthur Ferdinand Graham and Mabel Grady Graham. She graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1936 and received her degree of B.S. in Education from Ohio University in 1940. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, and served as president of the Women's Athletic Association during her senior year. Mary Katherine taught science and physical education at Moses Cleaveland School for several years, and following that she taught physical education for many years at Cleveland Heights High School. She finished her career as a guidance counselor at Cleveland Heights High School, and retired in the late 1970s. She worked for many summers directing the waterfront activities at Camp Twanekota on Chautauqua Lake, NY, after falling in love with it when she was a camper there. She was also active with her family, her sorority bridge club, with Meals on Wheels, and with many volunteer activities. She loved her nieces and nephews, Ireland (which she visited several times), and Cleveland sports, especially the Indians. Mary Katherine spent the last eleven years of her life at Breckenridge Village, where she very much enjoyed the activities and made many friends. She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, John J. Graham and Geraldine Connor Graham; her niece, Anne M. Graham (Marc Pepera), and her nephews, John J. Graham and Thomas A. Graham. I believe I remember Miss Graham, who I think was a counselor for Unit A.  There was essentially no place in society for bright, athletic women in those days (and there were any number of them in the class of 1965.)  To be blunt about it, there was no place whatsoever for women who were not enamored of men.

I'd like to think we've reformed somewhat: Title Nine (IX, if you will) radically changed women's athletics, and the LGBT movement has allowed everyone to calm down about the preferences of other people.

And, I'd like to think that Miss Graham would be pleased.
